There’s a trap waiting for consultants.
And you can’t escape it with more experience.
In fact, the more experienced consultants earn, the more they risk.
You can’t escape this trap with money.
You can’t escape it with great clients.
You can’t even escape it by doing better & better work.
Because the more you do, and the better you get over the course of your career… the bigger the trap grows.
Let me explain —
I was talking to a very experienced consultant the other day. She’d been in business for a while.
You’d think she had it all… the success, the reputation, the steady client base.
But she confessed to me in private:
“I’m just bored. Actually, really bored.”
That’s the trap.
BOREDOM.
And if you don’t think it’s dangerous, I have some bad news.
If we as consultants cannot find ways to vary the kind of clients we work with and the kinds of problems we solve, it’ll all seem pointless.
We’ll be intellectually bored out of our skulls.
And that boredom will leak into the rest of our professional lives.
The hours will start to drag.
The days will grow longer.
And we’ll start to put business on the backburner and focus on other, more stimulating things.
Forget about the money for a moment…
How can you have any impact if you’re bored out of your skull every day?
It’s dangerous.
So, back to talking with my friend:
I asked, “How? You’ve got the money, you’ve got great clients, you do great work. What’s really going on?”
When we dug deeper, we found something really interesting.
