“You have to kill all your darlings.”
^ Famous quote from Stephen King, who may have been quoting someone else.
Every author, novelist, copywriter – anyone who engages professionally with the written word – knows this to be true. A great piece of writing is the product of rigorous editing.
Editing involves “killing your darlings”… or the ideas that you are most attached to because they don’t serve the piece.
Important lesson here for entrepreneurs… You probably have lots of “darlings”… The startup idea you’ve been obsessing over… The app you believe is going to be the next big thing… The new market you’ve been dying to get into… All these darlings may be great ideas in and of themselves.
But you can’t work on all of them.
Look at any successful entrepreneur and you’ll find a clear pattern of behaviour… The relentless pursuit of a single idea.
